» Memory Loss
DEFINITION: Loss of memory, difficulty in retaining recently learned information and/or a loss of previously good faculties for remembering are among the most common concerns being expressed by a surprising number of patients within the past year. There is no "exact," medically scientific "definition" for "Memory Loss." The increasing public concern about and clinical frequency of conditions such as Alzheimer's Disease, Alzheimer's-Like Senile Dementia and the even more recent epidemic of animal and, at least in the case of England, human spongiform encephalapathies (Mad Cow, Scrapie, Kuru, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, Elk wasting disease) may be one "reason" for the more frequent complaints, but "clinical experience" teaches that when people complain, clinicians should pay attention. Some Memory problems have been studied and "explained" scientifically, such as low thyroid, low Vitamin B12 levels or side effects from medications, like beta blockers. However, most memory problems can not be specifically diagnosed or treated by conventional medicine.
DIAGNOSIS: Until very advanced in its manifestation and thus obvious to others, "memory loss" is a purely subjective experience. There are no "objective" tests for memory loss. Early memory loss is especially difficult to quantify. The diagnosis must be based mainly on the subjective history of the person experiencing the problem. When the loss becomes obvious to others the condition is usually in a advanced or an rapidly advancing situation. The diagnosis is therefore based on the history. Objective tests of brain circulation, environmental toxins, endocrine function (thyroid, adrenal, gonadal, etc.) and physiologic neuro-vegative regulation systems may be helpful in determining the factors related to Memory Loss.
TREATMENT: For mild complaints conventional medicine has very little to offer. For severe forms of memory loss, like Alzheimer's disease, a few conventional drugs are FDA approved, but there's a down side.
